DVD 9: HEALTHCARE

If you feel ill, you can go to the chemist to buy cough mixture or headache pills. For more powerful drugs, you need to get a prescription from a doctor. Doctors work in surgeries and healthy centres. There is also a phone service , called NHS Direct. With NHS Direct you can talk to a trained nurse. Some people prefer to use alternative medicine like Chinese herbs, acupunture or osteopathy. If you exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet, you shouldn't need to use the healthcare system.

DVD 8: COMPUTERS

Computers are now a very important part of life in Britain. Many people have got a private computer (PC). Young people love playing computer games. Computers will control the way we live, in "smart homes". They will adjust the temperature when it's hot. When it gets dark, the computer will switch on the lights. The 44% of young people said their computer was a trusted friend. Some young people spend so much time sending e-mails that they haven't got time to play computer games. Are computers taking over our lives?


DVD 7: TRANSPORT IN LONDON


There are many types of transport in London. 1,8 million people travel into the centre of London by train every day. There's a special kind of train called The Docklands Light Railway. These are computer-controlled trains with no drivers.
The underground of london or tube was the first in the world when it opened in 1863. There's also very famous the double-decker bus. The tranport that isn't very good in London is the car.

DVD 6: MARITIME HISTORY


Ships and the sea are very important in Britain. Britain once had the biggest navy in the world. Now it's smaller, but many other ships are used for importing and exporting goods. The ships used only sails and achieved very high speeds. Young men had to climb the rigging to put up the sails. Some people also travel by ship to go on holiday. The Queen Mary 2 is a very big sailing ship. You can visit a museum of maritime history in Liverpool. It's got several ships in the docks outside.

DVD 5: HORROR STORIES


Two of the most famous British horror stories are Dracula and Frankenstein. Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein in 1818. Bram Stoker, the Irish writer, created Dracula in 1897. There are many films wich feature these two horror characters. Stoker tought of his story when he was sitting in Highgate cemetery. He wondered what would. happen if sunlight could wake up a dead body in a tomb. Now visitors to London can go on special guided Dracula tours. British people love to be scared!

DVD 4: THE LAW

The most famous police station in Britain is Scotland Yar. They've got all a blue light outside to show they are police stations. For most people the police are the face of the law. They can arrest people, but they also give information. When a person is arrested, he goes to the police station. He must hand over everything he's carryng, Next they take fingerprints. The next day three magistrates listen to the evidence and decide if he's suspect or guilty.

DVD 3: SUPERMARKETS

A lot of people in Britain buy in supermarkets. The most famous supermarkets are Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury's. Eighty per cent of all food and drink comes from the five biggest supermarkets. Tesco has got nearly two thousand shops in Britain. It is the third biggest supermarket in the world. Most people in Britain buy their clothes from the supermarkets too.
Actually, small shops are closing because the supermarkets sell the same things cheaper.

DVD 2: SOAP OPERA

Many people in Britain love watching soap operas. The most famous soap operas are these: Eastanders, Coronation Street and Emmerdale. They appear several times a week and millions of people watch them.
Fans of the shows can also buy special soap opera magazines every week. In the magazines, they can read previews of the next week's shows. There's also a special website for some soap operas.

DVD 1: SCOTLAND

Scotland is one of the four regions in Britain. The capital of Scotland is Glasgow. Most of the people in this country live in the two main cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow. There are both modern and historic buildings here.
Scotland has got some very special tradicions. One of these tradition is the special sports event called the Highlands Games. You can see some unusual sports there. Scotland is also famous for its Whiski. Whiski is a drink made from barley, yeast and water.
